Scriptorium Writing Primer

Scriptorium Writing Level One

In Scriptorium Writing Level One, students will practice the exercises of narration, fable, description, anecdote, and proverb. They will learn the language of virtues and vices, and understand the topics of thesis, definition, opposite, and appeal.  They will be introduced to the literary devices of imagery, simile, metaphor, alliteration, and onomatopoeia. This book is recommended for 4th grade. Each Scriptorium Writing book includes 18 full color beautiful works of art and can be enjoyed year after year.

Scriptorium Writing Level Two

In Scriptorium Writing Level Two, students will practice the exercises of narration, fable, description, anecdote, proverb, encomium, and invective. They will learn the language of virtues and vices, and understand the topics of thesis, definition, opposite, appeal, paraphrase, analogy, and testimony.  They will be introduced to the literary devices of imagery, simile, metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, and allusion.  Students will learn to avoid wordiness and practice transitions.  They will practice using prepositional phrases and participle phrases stylistically. This book is recommended for 5th grade. Each Scriptorium Writing book includes 18 full-color beautiful works of art and can be enjoyed year after year.

Scriptorium Writing Level Three

In Scriptorium Writing Level Three, students will practice the exercises of narration, fable, description, anecdote, proverb, encomium, invective, comparison, and commonplace. They will understand the topics of thesis, definition, opposite, appeal, paraphrase, analogy, and testimony.  In addition to reviewing the literary devices of imagery, simile, metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, and allusion, they will learn synechdoche, metonymy, and apostrophe.  Students will learn to avoid wordiness and practice transitions.  They will practice using dependent clauses stylistically and organize their essays with an introduction, body, and conclusion. This book is recommended for 6th grade. Each Scriptorium Writing book includes 18 full-color beautiful works of art and can be enjoyed year after year.

Scriptorium Writing Level Four

In Scriptorium Writing Level Four, students will practice the exercises of narration, fable, description, anecdote, proverb, encomium, invective, comparison, commonplace, confirmation, refutation, and impersonation. In addition to a review of topics from Level Three, students will learn topics to argue for the veracity or falseness of myths.  In addition to reviewing the literary devices of imagery, simile, metaphor, alliteration, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, and allusion, they will practice the schemes of anaphora, epistrophe, epanalepsis, and anadiplosis. This book is recommended for 7th grade. Each Scriptorium Writing book includes 18 full-color beautiful works of art and can be enjoyed year after year.

Scriptorium Writing Level Five

In Scriptorium Writing Level Five, students will practice the exercises of narration, fable, description, anecdote, proverb, encomium, invective, comparison, commonplace, confirmation, refutation, impersonation, and thesis.  Each earlier exercise helps prepare students for the more advanced writing.   Students will practice using a wide range of literary devices and schemes, and understand the persuasive power of logos and pathos.   This book is excellent preparation for high school level writing. Scriptorium Writing Teacher's Guide

The Scriptorium Writing Teacher’s Guide elaborates on the philosophy of the curriculum, the method of a lesson, the role of the teacher, how to plan a lesson, and how to assess. It also includes a glossary of terms and suggestions for extending lessons. It is a highly recommended companion to the writing curriculum.
